Dr. Andrea Kraj

Dr. Andrea Kraj is a practicing professional engineer (Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba) specialized in Multi-Renewable Energy Systems and Smart Grid Technology for Smart Cities and Island Energy Networks, with 18 years of experience. Her work focuses on the application of intelligent energy systems for improved management of multiple renewable energy systems in island nations for rural electrification and autonomy from fossil fuel dependence. 
She completed a Ph.D. (2015), M.Sc. (2007) and B.Sc. (2003) in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with Aerospace Specialization. She is a pioneering leader in developing sophisticated computer modeling and simulation of advanced energy systems, supporting the design, operation and optimization of multi-renewable energy systems with storage for micro-grid networks. She has applied her expertise for the redevelopment of the Energy Master Plan for the island of Fernando de Noronha, Brasil providing the island with a roadmap for renewable energy development and policy mechanisms. She is an accomplished author and speaker (TEDx “Smart Cities Begin With You”), having published several articles on energy policy, community energy development, and remote power systems. Additionally, she has several years of experience in design for manufacture, CAD modeling and FEA in the aerospace, composite materials, including international business with a focus on strategy development in the energy sector.
Dr. Kraj is passionate about community renewable energy, smart cities, smart grid, remote power systems, energy policy and sustainability.
 
Dr. Kraj’s pioneering work in the area of Renewable Energy for Islands and Smart Microgrids makes her an authority in the subject area. Her foundational work showed that communities located in remote locations must rely on importation of foreign fuels for their basic energy needs, while surrounded by renewable resources that are often not harvested for local use.  Dr. Kraj’s work introduced concepts of intelligent renewable resource planning and design of systems to increase the renewable energy ratio of a given geographical area, particularly for islands.
Dr. Kraj is also a subject-matter expert in the solar industry as a consultant to the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) for her expertise in the design and application of solar photovoltaic energy in residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial applications, as well as for distributed generation with storage. She is certified in solar PV system design, operations and maintenance.
Dr. Kraj has experience leading the development of solar power projects from inception to operations through her work with CORE Renewable Energy, where she conducted solar data measurements and analysis using aerial mapping, and certified instrumentation to obtain, process, verify, and analyze solar resource potential producing monthly reports and a complete statistical analysis. Through in-depth experience analyzing solar data in various terrains, climates, and countries, Dr. Kraj has completed solar resource assessments to the highest standards and qualifications that comply with all international standard requirements applied to solar instrumentation and data gathering. In addition, Dr. Kraj has conducted solar studies and associated battery storage analysis to ensure that the most efficient and cost effective solutions are identified.
